Various Updates
I am still collecting applications for the potential deathclown course cohort. I plan on starting to sift through them the end of this week and the beginning of next.
It is not even an exaggeration to name that doing this work, in this culture, is atrociously difficult. For one, people don’t usually have enough cross-disciplinary life & artistic exposure to the vibes and concepts, but also that people are so FrAcTurED, their attention and resources split and captured by elite capitalism, that the very things they say they want (community building, culturemaking, trauma healing, post traumatic growth, creative play) are almost rejected outright due to fear, threat, confusion and exhaustion.
People want quick & easy, two things that are antithetical to artistic craft. They want to absorb complex understandings merely by listening to a recording. That really only sorta kinda works if you already have a dedicated practice and know how to practice, integrate and remix information into embodied craft. And for an artform like deathclown which is a combination of multiple areas of study like death practice, nondual animism, tantra, bouffon, addiction rehab — that is a recipe for disaster. That’s also why I don’t allow audits or drop-ins to the work. This training must be done in a dedicated series or not at all. Otherwise it becomes corrupted by the pre-existing habits & biases that are already running much of people’s behaviors and perception.
Deathclown is a kind of initiatory experience that unfolds over time, with embodied actions and pedagogy. It is the thing (you want), but the thing does not conform to anything less than the full attention and integrity it warrants. You can’t hack intimacy.
And you can see pieces of it in the world, in people’s creative performance, but once you pause to try and understand it so that you can learn it, you realize all the blockages you have that tell you not to do this thing your system knows it wants and needs. To the typical modernized, whitewashed person, PLAY is the most dangerous fetish because relationship to impulses and relationship to communication are fucking fucked.
Monday night I went through day 1 of 4 for a small group of in-person folks here in portland, oregon. It went swimmingly, as much as can be gleaned from a small drop in a large bucket. But we will see what can happen in 4 days spread out over 3 weeks.
We are also hosting a bunch of salons and other culturemaking events, you can see the group schedule at participatoryartscoop.com
All that being said, if you cant train in-person with us over time, then I have online one-on-one and small group creative coaching sessions that can happen. Went through one with a client the other day and a lot can happen in 90 minutes. Facing the fire.
You can’t shortcut the reps.
and it’s funny to me, now that the writers and actors are finally going on strike, we may all have to rethink how we have outsourced performance arts to “other people”, consuming media but not producing artistic actions ourselves. Capitalism requires fascism, and the indoctrination of caste systems into children’s self-perception. The industries and systems that make the 1% richer and richer are also making the 99% stupider and stupider. Even if your art is not for public consumption, you should still be prioritizing intimacy with the process itself and all the many vital forces and energies that make it possible for you to experience such an experience. Remember, PERCEPTION IS A CREATIVE ACT. You can always expand your options regarding playfully relating with reality-which-is-a-dream.
Ok, this is a short one because i have a lot of design work to do.
